Underglaze Painted Chinese Porcelain Plate

(1722 - 1800)

Chinese Export porcelain plate with a blue underglaze painted decoration. The central motif is encircled by a very sloppily painted blue spearhead diaper pattern with two lines beneath. The rim has small clusters of fish roe between a shaded floral and leaf motif. Additional decoration on the central motif cannot be determined, but is most likely a pavilion landscape decoration. The base has an unglazed, undercut footring with an obvious manufacturing defect close to the footring. The rim is subtly trimmed and is most likely octagonal in shape. The plate is mended in two large sections consisting of nine mended sherds. Although the sections do not mend, they are most likely from the same vessel.
