EB Smoking Pipe Heel

(1650 - 1664)

One white ball clay smoking pipe heel. The heel is large and circular. There is an EB maker's mark on the heel. EB pipes were manufactured in Amsterdam by an Englishman from Surrey named Edward Bird (Burt). Documents list Bird as a pipe maker in 1630. After his demise in 1655, Bird's son Evert, continued manufacturing pipes, probably using the EB mark. Pipes with the EB mark in a beaded circle were produced from c. 1650-1664. the pipe is blackened from smoking.
