English Brown (Fulham-Type) Salt-Glazed Stoneware Tankard

(1702)

Thirteen English Brown salt-glazed stoneware body, base and rim sherds from a mug or tankard. The exterior has a fine mottled brown salt glaze while the interior is lighter in color. The exterior is stamped/impressed "AR" beneath a crown. The mark refers to Anne Regina (Queen Anne) who reigned from 1702 until 1714, although the mark was used for a longer time. The tankard has a partial handle terminal but most of the handle is missing. The body appears to be bulbous and is slightly larger than the rim diameter. The base is cordoned. This vessel mends in two sections with eight rim and body sherds that mend but are not mended and four base and body sherds that mend but are not mended. The base and rim portions are likely from the same vessel, although multiple tankards were found in this provenience.
