Copper Alloy Shoe Buckle

(1775 - 1790)

Approximately half of one heavily corroded copper alloy shoe buckle broken in four parts and consisting of a thin flattened metal frame in a rectangular shape with an iron chape pin adhered at one end. The frame has cast, decorative striations/bands along the curved frame. The copper alloy is heavily corroded and the chape pin is heavily rusted. The chape pin may be a hollow cast tube, although it is difficult to determine due to the amount of rust. The buckle is incomplete, but measures to 2.31 inches in width and is at least 2.47 inches in length. The full size would most likely measure to approximately 4 to 5 inches in length. The buckle may possibly be an Artois-style buckle, popular during the end of the 18th century.
