Refined Earthenware Body/Rim Sherds

(1770 - 1981)

One rim sherd and two smaller body sherds from an indeterminate type of vessel with an unusual dark blue, matte slip or glaze over a grayish-white paste. This color of paste and exterior décor appears to have resulted from being burnt. The type of ceramic is unknown due to the burnt exterior, but is likely some type of refined earthenware. This vessel might have been thrown away after a kitchen stove-related mishap or possibly after NYC's Great Fire of 1835.
