Painted Floral Whiteware Saucer

(1830 - 1860)

Two body and rim sherds from a whiteware saucer with a painted green and red floral motif in chrome colors that became common after 1830. These sherds show evidence of burning, which might suggest a kitchen stove-related mishap or perhaps that they were a causality of NYC's Great Fire of 1835. The Pearl Street Hotel, where these sherds were excavated from within a cistern, did sustain fire damage at that time and was rebuilt afterwards. For much of the 19th century, painted wares were the most popular decoration on teawares, a category to which saucers belong.
