Overglaze Printed Creamware Pitcher

(ca. 1760 - ca. 1780)

Four mended base and body sherds comprising a creamware pitcher. A single body sherd also mends with the vessel. There is a black overglaze bat transfer printed ship decoration on both sides of the exterior surface. One scene includes a portion of the last verse from the English poet John Gay's (1685-1732) "Sweet William's Farewell to Black-Eyed Susan: "Her lessening boat unwilling rows to land. ‘Adieu!’ she cried; and waved her lily hand." The base of the jug is approximately 9 cm.
