Underglaze Painted Chinese Porcelain Rim and Body Sherd

(Post 1630)

One Chinese porcelain rim and body sherd. Likely part of a plate or shallow bowl. There is a brown painted line atop the surface of the rim. Known as a brown washed or brown dressed rim, this treatment was applied beginning around the 1630's to strengthen vessel rims and thin out fragile glaze. The interior surface is decorated with a blue painted underglaze floral and geometric design featuring a flower, fish roe, and hex cells. There is a trace of blue glaze on the exterior surface.
