Printed Whiteware Teacup Sherd

(1840 - 1859)

A blue transfer-printed body sherd from a paneled teacup. The vessel uses both interior and exterior decoration. Commonly called "gothic," these paneled designs proliferated throughout the mid-nineteenth century. The exterior features a landscape with a body of water, trees, and two domed structures visible. The interior rim uses a border with concentric wavy lines and sports the remnants of a tree on the inside of the cup's base. The cup exhibits some damage, likely from coming into contact with an iron object.
