Printed Whiteware Plate

(1842 - 1855)

A 9.5-inch black transfer printed whiteware plate. The vessel consists of four mended sherds on the base and three mended sherds on the rim. Two additional sherds mend but are not mended. The damaged underside of the plate bears the maker's mark of T. J. & J. Mayer of Longport, Burslem, Staffordshire. This "Rhone Scenery" design was likely created between 1842 and 1855. This series depicted Romantic views of the Rhone River, which begins in Switzerland and passes through Lake Geneva and France into the Mediterranean. The rim uses a repeating motif of scrolls, horizontal lines, and both floral and botanical motifs. The central body of the plate shows heavy damage from iron corrosion. A metal object, likely a nail, has adhered to the front of the plate.
