A green transfer printed whiteware rim sherd from a 3.75-inch diameter hollowware vessel, probably a teacup. Likely created by William Adams IV & Sons of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire between 1829 and 1861 this "Father Mathew" series featured images of Theobald Mathew, an Irish temperance reformer active in the early nineteenth century. The vessel uses interior and exterior decoration with the extant design on the outside of the cup showing "[Father] Mathew" evangelizing to a group of worshipers flanking him on either side. The assemblage is composed of a mixed group of men, women, children and infants. The complete design features a beehive, rake, shovel and two-pronged hay fork representing industry. A smaller version of the image adorns the interior border, the remains of which can be seen on this sherd flanked by the phrases "Temper[ance And Industry]" above and "Indus[try Pays Debts]" below.
