Painted Salt-Glazed Stoneware Shaving Basin

Approximately one-half of a salt-glazed stoneware barber's bowl or shaving basin, with painted decoration in cobalt blue along the flat section of the vessel's brim. The painted pattern depicts a straight razor, scissors, and possibly a brush or powder puff, which would have been tools of the barber's profession. The bowl was made by the Crolius or Remmey potteries in New York City, circa 1730-1775. The vessel consists of two mended sherds.
