Rouletted "Bristol Diamond" Smoking Pipe Stem

(1660 - 1700)

One white ball clay pipe stem with at least three bands of rouletted Bristol diamonds, some without the central circle within the diamond. An additional band of repeating pointed crosses, similar to a clover or fleur de lis motif, also encircles the stem, with a visible impressed/stamped maker's mark which either reads WE or perhaps WEI. Below the Bristol diamond rouletting, there is an additional band of diagonal rouletting. The stamped makers mark is most likely the mark of pipe maker William Evans I or William Evans II (1660-1700), a pipe manufacturer in Bristol, England.
