EB Smoking Pipe Stem, Heel, and Bowl Rim

Approximately one half of a smoking bowl and attached stem of a pipe with an EB maker's mark on its heel. The pipe is polished with traces of red iron stains and has a belly shaped, medium-sized bowl with a finely rouletted rim and medium thick walls. The circular heel is marked EB surrounded by a beaded circle. The bore diameter of the thick-walled stem is 6/64 inches. EB pipes were manufactured in Amsterdam by an Englishman from Surrey named Edward Bird (Burt). Documents list Bird as a pipe maker in 1630. After his demise in 1655, Bird's son Evert, continued manufacturing pipes, probably using the EB mark. Pipes with the EB mark in a beaded circle were produced from c. 1650-1664.
