Lot 27* Ceramic Shop Deposit: Rubble Between Brick and Wood Floors (624.1075)

(Post 1835)

This context (Cat# 1075: Lot 27*, Test Cut AO, Strat 1, Level a) consists of artifacts from the rubble between a brick floor and a wooden floor located in Lot 27*. The deposits located below this are part of a ceramic shop dump and this context was likely deposited later. The ceramic shop deposit was sampled with Shovel Test 16, Test Cut AO and Shovel Test 22. At a depth of 10 to 12 inches below the brick floor, a burnt and decayed wooden floor was uncovered. This context represents the material between the brick floor and the burnt wooden floor. This material yielded a large concentration of brick and mortar, which is likely part of building demolition rubble.

Some ceramics that crossmend with the undisturbed ceramic deposit were included in the rubble between the brick and wood floors. This is likely due to the demolition of the main portion of the building which housed the ceramics shop. Ceramics were mixed in during demolition, accounting for the crossmending of material. This would suggest that Lot 27 was not incorporated into the Pearl Street House until after the Great Fire of 1835. For more information about the deposits related to the ceramic dump, please read pages 101 to 112 of the 7 Hanover Square site report.
