Printed Whiteware Body Sherd

(1840 - 1870)

A blue transfer printed whiteware sherd from a straight-sided hollowware vessel, likely a pitcher. Commonly called "gothic," these flat paneled designs for hexagonal or octagonal vessels proliferated throughout the mid-nineteenth century. The vessel uses both exterior and interior decoration. The central motif uses Romantic imagery, wherein a group of observers views a bucolic landscape and stylized buildings from atop a cliff. A geometric border with lines appears on the interior and exterior rim.
