A black transfer printed whiteware plate. The vessel consists of two base sherds that bear the maker's mark of T. J. & J. Mayer of Longport, Burslem, Staffordshire. This "Rhone Scenery" design was likely created between 1842 and 1855. This series depicted Romantic views of the Rhone River, which begins in Switzerland and passes through Lake Geneva and France into the Mediterranean.
