Printed Whiteware Teacup Rim Sherd

(1829 - 1861)

A green transfer printed whiteware rim sherd from a 4-inch diameter hollowware vessel, probably a teacup. Likely created by William Adams IV & Sons of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire between 1829 and 1861 this "Forget-Me-Not" series featured scenes of lovers. The vessel uses interior and exterior decoration with the extant design showing a man and woman embracing while resting on a rocky outcropping along the shore. The complete design shows the male figure is gesturing towards the sea where a tall sail ship is moored in the harbor. Both the interior and exterior borders show stylized forget-me-not flowers running along the gently scalloped rim of the cup. The interior rim also sports groupings of forget-me-nots placed against a diaper background. Although the motif was originated by William Adams IV & Sons, Livesley Powell & Co. purchased the rights to the design in an 1861 bankruptcy sale and later produced their own version.
