In the more than 350 years of its recorded history, Governors Island has been pasture, timberland, game preserve, summer resort, garrison, arsenal, prison and airfield. The island was in continuous military use for over two centuries and was an integral part of the defense system of the New York Harbor. Multiple archaeological campaigns have been completed on the island and have uncovered 17th-19th century resources. The archaeological repository has some of the associated collections and the historic areas of the island are incorporated into the Governors Island Historic District which also includes Individual landmarks.
