The Landmarks Preservation Commission desginated Aakawaxung Munahanung (Island Protected from the Wind) Archaeological Site on June 22, 2021. It is the first New York City landmark that specifically recognizes the many generations of Indigenous Peoples who lived in the area for thousands of years and is located in Tottenville, Staten Island.
