Negative Printed Whiteware Body Sherd

(1821 - 1840)

A dark blue negative printed body sherd, likely from a flatware vessel. Printed "in reverse" to most vessels, negative printed wares used dark-colored backgrounds upon which design elements were rendered in white. The flat shape of the sherd suggests it functioned either as the base of a small plate or as a strainer. The vessel's extant decoration proves difficult to interpret due to fire damage, although a dotted border remains visible.
