Lot 28, Tan Sand Below Privy (624.492)

(Early-to-Mid 18th Century)

This deposit consists of artifacts from a two to five-inch band of tan and rust-colored sand between the base of the feature deposit and the underlying landfill in Lot 28. This stratum yielded three sherds of white salt-glazed stoneware. Since this ceramic type was not manufactured until 1720, the deposit was probably not part of the landfill and could be seen as being associated with the construction of the feature. The presence of a number of sandstone fragments in this deposit is consistent with this interpretation. This stratum also yielded a sherd of mottled glaze "midlands" type yellowware manufactured between 1660 and 1750.

This context (Catalog #492, Lot 28, Test Cut J, Stratum 15, Level a) is one of the deposits located beneath the privy feature and above the landfill deposits in Lot 28. Please see page 327 of the site report for additional information.
