Freedom of the press was affirmed for New York and for the nation when the editor of the "New York Weekly Journal" was acquitted of libel after having dared to criticize the conduct in office of William Cosby, the British Governor. Zenger’s attorney, Andrew Hamilton, argued that truth must be accepted as a defense against the charge of libel and that a free people have the right to criticize their rulers.
